This species is listed as Special Concern in Michigan. It typically occurs in rich deciduous forests. The blooms are early and short-lived, but the foliage continues to expand after flowering and forms a multi-stemmed clump. Flowers are quite similar in appearance to Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis). Seeds are dispersed by ants.
